The Art of High-Resolution Scanning: Recovering Memories
Alexandra Popescu
Photo Restoration Specialist
In our workshop, the scanning process is more than just simple digitization. It is the first crucial step in resuscitating an old photograph, transforming a physical fragment, worn by time, into a high-fidelity digital file.
We use dedicated scanners with optical resolution of up to 6400 dpi, capable of capturing every microscopic detail on the photo paper surface. This is the key to "resolving" – recovering – the lost information: the fine texture, the subtle black and white tones, even the traces of wear that we treat later.
Materials We Process
- Printed photographs (black & white & color)
- Film negatives
- Slides
- Old postcards
The process begins with a delicate cleaning of the photograph's surface to remove dust and fingerprints. Then, we place the photograph on the scanner bed, ensuring it is perfectly flat. Color depth and resolution settings are adjusted according to the condition and type of the original material. The resulting raw scans are large files that preserve all the data necessary for the next phase: digital restoration.
The ultimate goal is not just a digital copy, but a reconstruction of the original clarity. Through this precision scanning technique, scratches and stains become data separate from the base image, easily isolated and corrected in professional software, without affecting the integrity of the authentic details.
